LIVE PORCINE MODEL FOR SURGICAL TRAINING IN TRACHEOSTOMY AND OPEN AIRWAY SURGERY

Deonarain et al. Laryngoscope 2020;130(8):2063-2068.

CONCLUSION: The live porcine model has high face and content validity as a training tool for tracheostomy and laryngotracheoplasty using costal cartilage and thyroid ala cartilage grafts. This training model can help surgical trainees practice these complex, low-frequency procedures.

COMPETENCY-BASED ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR PEDIATRIC ESOPHAGOSCOPY: INTERNATIONAL MODIFIED DELPHI CONSENSUS

Faucett et al. Laryngoscope 2020: Online ahead of print.

CONCLUSION: It is feasible to reach consensus on the important steps involved in pediatric rigid esophagoscopy using a modified Delphi consensus process. These items can now be considered to create a competency-based assessment tool for pediatric rigid esophagoscopy. Such a tool will hopefully allow trainees to focus on the important aspects of this procedure and help teaching programs standardize how they evaluate trainees during this procedure.

SYNTHETIC SIMULATOR FOR SURGICAL TRAINING IN TRACHEOTOMY AND OPEN AIRWAY SURGERY

Deonarain et al. Laryngoscope 2021: Online ahead of print.

CONCLUSION: The synthetic simulator created for this study has high face and content validity for tracheotomy and laryngotracheoplasty with anterior costal cartilage and thyroid ala cartilage grafts, and was not found to be different than the live porcine model for these procedures.

COMPETENCY-BASED ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR PEDIATRIC TRACHEOTOMY: INTERNATIONAL MODIFIED DELPHI CONSENSUS

Propst et al. Laryngoscope 2019: Online ahead of print.

CONCLUSION: It is feasible to reach consensus on the important steps involved in pediatric tracheotomy using a modified Delphi consensus process. These items can now be considered to create a competency-based assessment tool for pediatric tracheotomy. Such a tool will hopefully allow trainees to focus on the important aspects of this procedure and help teaching programs standardize how they evaluate trainees during this procedure.
